Above the law | Salon.com

Above the law | Salon.com: "And now it turns out that Bush's eavesdropping program is not only in criminal violation of FISA, but an end-run around one of the most basic pillars of our system of law: the constitutional right to counsel and the confidentiality of attorney-client conversations necessary to protect that right."

Sony BRAVIA - The Advert

Sony BRAVIA - The Advert: "Sending 250,000 multi-coloured 'superballs' bouncing down the streets of San Francisco"

This is what music videos should be like. It's amazing.

Clearly I'm jonesing for home... That may also explain my fixation with Top Chef.

PANDA PHOTOS

My classmate Elizabeth was looking at these photos that she got forwarded and won a crowd of people oohing and ahing over her shoulder.

Here's the fwded text:

>>>. Subject: Baby Pandas
>>>
>>>>These little guys are cute.

>>>>>For those that haven't seen the 16 pandas born in Oct 2005... J
>>>>>These little ones were born in The Sichuan Wolong Panda
>>>>>Protection and Breed Center in Southern China . The zoo
>>>>> artificially inseminated 38 females. These were the first 16
>>>>>born and include 5 sets of twins. The others were due later in

Apparently google's still working out some of the connections between picasa, hello, and blogger. Picasa via Hello appears to still work best...

Worldmapper: The world as you've never seen it before

Worldmapper: The world as you've never seen it before

Karen sent me these maps which are great! They show various types of data on population and trade, representing magnitude through the size of each country. It's great, and it's also perfect because I just started my GIS class on Tuesday, and we're supposed to be paying attention to maps and bringing in one good map and one poor map to class on Tuesday.

Some Good Blog Detective Work

Talking Points Memo: by Joshua Micah Marshall: March 26, 2006 - April 01, 2006 Archives

This is incredibly amusing. Maybe the reason that all the Republican politicians insist that everything is great in Iraq is that they have been taken to Turkey instead and simply told they're in Iraq...

This reminds me of something that one of my classmates was telling me about from one of her books -- a former CIA director who wanted to visit an operation in Afghanistan but was flown in to Pakistan, driven in circles, then shown actors in Pakistan instead. He was moved to tears. I'll do more research on this unless anyone knows what I'm talking about.

It's hard to believe that anyone would be dumb enough to pull this. I don't know anything about Kaloogian, but I actually tend to believe that it might be a mistake -- could someone possibly have thought that they could get away with this kind of deception?

Thanks Tim Grieve for blogging this on Salon.

Drudges

I am wrong.

Drudge.com = Drudge Retort.
Says Google, "Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Parody of Matt Drudge's site that puts the yellow back in journalism."

drudgereport.com = Drudge Report.

Hunters Can Take Up to 325,000 Seal Pups

Hunters Can Take Up to 325,000 Seal Pups: "McCartney and his wife, Heather Mills McCartney, took to the ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence two weeks ago to frolic with the doe-eyed pups to garner international support to end the hunt. He called the practice a 'stain on the character of the Canadian people.'"

O Canada, say it ain't so! Found this article on drudge no less...

I think this is kind of cool, even though it seems to be messing up my frames in the window...

gladwell.com

gladwell.com: "In fact, 'Freakonomics' specially singles out for ridicule the theory of broken windows, which I suggest in the Tipping Point played a big role in New York City's recovery. So what gives? Why do I love a book so much, if it contradicts my own book?"

I got sent to Malcolm Gladwell's blog from the NYT. There's an interesting section where Gladwell discusses Freakonomics and his specific perspectives on the particularly controversial section about Roe v. Wade being a significant factor in reducing crime 18 years following.

His blog looks pretty entertaining with a section on NBA heuristics below the Freakonomics entry.

Salon.com Life | My Ambien lover

Salon.com Life | My Ambien lover: "Sure, he was a critical jackass by the light of day, but by the warm glow of a small yellow pill and a single malt scotch, he was a gallant suitor, a crooner of sweet nothings, my accessible, chatty fiance-to-be. He would call every weeknight around 11p.m. and it was just like it was in the heady beginning of our romance."

This is pretty amusing, and it is a playful look at the ways that pharmaceuticals wreak havoc on people's lives in surprising ways. The comments posted are pretty intense -- worth checking out to see the strong reactions.

Chefs Looking for Tenderness Meet Tough New York Rules - New York Times

Chefs Looking for Tenderness Meet Tough New York Rules - New York Times: "Gastronomy, meet bureaucracy.
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has quelled the sous vide revolution, for the moment."

Apparently NYC govt is concerned about the safety of this new cooking technique. I'm not particularly. I've never had anything sous vide, but the article definitely makes me want to find one of the high end places that does it right and see what the fuss is all about.

Natalie Portman Raps

Edit: The salon link has changed. Watch from the NBC site for best results. I've watched it 10 times and it is HILARIOUS.
Salon.com Arts & Entertainment | Video Dog

I was sure that I blogged this earlier, but somehow it didn't work. This Natalie Portman rap video has got to be one of the funniest things I've watched in ages.

I've watched it 5 times today. If Salon makes you watch the Premium ad to view it, it's definitely still worth it.

heh heh
