The Least Affordable Place to Live? Try Salinas - New York Times

The Least Affordable Place to Live? Try Salinas - New York Times: "California has the distinction of having the 11 least-affordable metropolitan areas in the country."

I'm putting the blame squarely on Prop 13, which you can pretty much blame as a root cause of what's wrong with most anything in California.

Some friends just moved to Salinas this past year -- but they're living in a Catholic worker house so I guess this doesn't affect them too much.

I was a little shocked that Fresno Co. was a darker red on the map than Chicago. I'm not sure if that says more about the price of homes or about the average income in places like Salinas and Fresno.

Anyway, interesting article...

It must be a combination, right? I think the point is partly that you can find SOMEWHERE to live in Chicago (and within the city limits). When I visited, it seemed like there were plenty of areas that were affordable still. Yes, there's concerns about gentrification, but there's communities out there that people can afford and will continue to be able to for quite some time. CA on the other hand just sort of lacks any affordable options in many metro regions.

NYT also had an article recently on the housing market coming down in CA gradually. It's one of the most-emailed articles right now if you go check their site.
