music

I've been buying tons of music lately, more in the past year than the previous 4 or 5 years combined I'd say, and while some of it is superb, it doesn't last in terms of the satisfaction.

Who are the artists that have always inspired you and continue to every time you listen? I'm up for any genre, any time period. Any suggestions are welcome.

I think Chris Rock said something to the effect that you will always love whichever music was popular when you first hit puberty and become sexually aware of other people. Whether or not you objectively think that music is any good or not, it holds a special place in your heart. I think most people would disavow ever liking Vanilla Ice, but we still get up to dance with big silly grins on our faces whenever 'Ice Ice Baby' comes up.

For me, Tori Amos, U2, REM and Ani DiFranco are the artists from high school/early college that I still turn to and will probably always love no matter what they end up doing. I'm also addicted to discovering new music, and like you said, some of it is great, but I just don't listen as obsessively as I did when I was a teenager.

Some of the artists I've fell for more recently that have that same holding power: Neko Case, The New Pornographers, The Clash, Lauryn Hill, Sleater-Kinney, Talking Heads, Mos Def, the Magnetic Fields.

I agree largely -- the self-titled Ani album will always be a good listen (most of her albums pre-Up Up Up Up Up Up work), and I have a thing for old Dar as well. I've been annoying myself though because I have to buy every new album of Ani's out of some sort of automatic unescapable impulse, when all I really want to do is put "Both Hands" and "Fire Door" on repeat. I don't think I've ever listened through Evolve or that dual album about Ladies Night Out or Screaming Cats or whatever.

I could spend some time listening to Neko Case... She is excellent, and I've not played her songs in a while.

I've an issue of Magnet magazine which has Carl Newman of The New Pornographers on the cover. Maybe I'll have to give him a try.

If you like Talking Heads, you should listen to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah which my friend Rachel (and Salon) turned me on to. Their website has 2 free downloads including "Upon This Title Wave of Young Blood" which is one of the strongest tracks on the album. Although they're all good. But I've listened to them through enough that the excitement of their discovery has already started wearing...

Their site is:
