"California's taxpayers have gotten shortchanged by the federal government for the 18th consecutive year -- and by a growing margin, a study released Friday shows."

And NJ is apparently the MOST shortchanged of all, getting back 58 cents for every dollar it contributes in federal taxes. (CA gets 79 cents).

I've noticed these sort of analyses more and more out there, especially as the left has been flirting with the idea of being increasingly for states' rights in the current political climate. Really interesting to see where this line of thinking is going to lead...

That's quite astute. Post welfare-reform 5 years ago, the federal government took away the rights of legal immigrants to collect SSI and some other government benefits.

California has been backfilling with programs like CAPI, but you can see that it's a financial nightmare. The Governator last year tried to block grant the funds to shift the responsibility of payments down to the local level. Then, with insufficient funds, it would be the local governments who look bad when they decide they can't afford the payments. Trace the financial shortage up to the top!
